
The GNR identified two people suspected of the crime of mistreating pet animals and seized 54 dogs during an inspection operation in Quinta do Anjo, in the municipality of Palmela. Three of the animals were returned to their rightful owners.
The case was reported through the SOS Environment and Territory Line to the military personnel from the GNR Environmental Protection Center in Palmela. On the 25th and 26th of June, a joint inspection action was carried out in the Quinta do Anjo location, aimed at verifying animal welfare conditions in a Illegal Genesis Urban Area (AUGI), reinforcing animal welfare inspection in the region.
The dogs were rescued due to a lack of hygiene, animal welfare and adequate space for accommodation. Several of the animals were in small cages and others in compartments without any sanitary conditions and precarious conditions for prolonged housing.
According to , the inspection resulted in the seizure of 54 dogs, of which 34 were handed over to institutions, 17 to a property manager and three were returned to their respective owner.

The action had the support of the General Food and Veterinary Directorate (DGAV), the Municipal Veterinary Doctor of Palmas and the Inspection Office of the City of Palmas. The facts were communicated to the Judicial Court of the District of Setúbal.
The GNR recalls that the protection and well-being of companion animals constitute one of its priorities, appealing to reporting situations of neglect or mistreatment through the SOS Environment and Territory Line.
Last week, in the municipality of Amarante, district of Porto, people were arrested and a woman was accused of animal abuse.
