The weather in Slovakia has gone crazy: The south is scorching with brutal heat, terrifying storms are rolling over the rest of the country!

  • In the south of Slovakia today, the heat is threatening up to 38 degrees Celsius.
  • The highest level of heat applies in several districts of the Košice and Nitra regions.
  • The first level warning against storms is in effect throughout Slovakia until Thursday morning.
  • During the heat, the drinking regime, shade, light clothing and load restriction are key.

Heat warnings are in effect on Tuesday until 8:00 p.m. in the evening. The third level of warning applies mainly in the southern districts of Slovakia, where the temperature can reach 38 degrees Celsius. At the same time in the entire Slovak Republic from 12:00 p.m. Level 1 thunderstorm warnings are in effect. The Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute (SHMÚ) reported on this on its website.

The highest level of warning against high temperatures applies in most districts of Košické, Nitra and Trnava regions, as well as in the districts of Veľký Krtíš, Rimavská Sobota, Revúca, Lučenec and Krupina. The second level of warning applies in the entire Bratislava and Trenčín regions, the rest of the Banská Bystrica region and in some districts of the Prešovské, Trnava, Košice and Nitra regions and for the Turčianske Teplice district. There, temperatures can rise to 35 degrees Celsius.

The first level warning applies mainly in the districts of the Žilina region and in the districts of Bardejov, Levoča, Poprad, Sabinov and Spišská Nová Ves. In these locations, the thermometer can show 33 degrees Celsius. The first level warning against storms is in effect throughout Slovakia until Thursday (7/2) morning. Thunderstorms can be associated with heavy downpours with an intensity of 20 to 30 millimeters of precipitation in 30 minutes, with wind gusts of 65 to 85 kilometers per hour and hail.

The Office of Public Health (ÚVZ) of the Slovak Republic warns in connection with temperatures that the risk groups of the population include children, the elderly, pregnant women and chronically ill people, especially people with cardiovascular, respiratory or mental diseases or who are overweight. “High external temperatures can cause overheating of the body and health complications – an increase in body temperature, malaise, drowsiness, headaches, dizziness, nausea or vomiting. The extreme case is serious collapse conditions, which can lead, under certain conditions, to the eventual death of people, especially in risk groups,” warns ÚVZ.

According to him, an important principle is consistent adherence to a regular drinking regimen, even if you are not thirsty. Physical activity should also be limited, stay out of direct sunlight and stay outside to a minimum. Medical rescuers recommend lighter food during the heat, proper clothing including head coverings and sunglasses and the use of protective creams. Children and pets must not be left in direct sunlight or in parked cars. If people experience severe weakness, dizziness, nausea or collapse, they should seek help. High temperatures and drought significantly increase the risk of fires.
