Import tax for electric cars rises this Wednesday

The import tax for electric and hybrid vehicles suffers a new readjustment starting this Wednesday (1st). The Minister of Development, Industry, Commerce and Services, Márcio Elias Rosa, confirmed last week that the rate increase schedule has not changedeven with the maintenance of tax-free import quotas for dismantled vehicles.

“Three years ago we started a schedule to increase the import tax that will reach 35% for all vehicles. This schedule has not been changed, there has been no modification”, stated the minister during his participation in the EBC program “Good Morning, Minister”. According to planning, the maximum rate will be fully implemented from July onwards.

Custom made visa encourage national production. According to the government, the existence of an exempt quota serves to serve automakers that are still in the process of setting up in the country. “Within the quota the tax is zero; above it, it reaches 35%. This decision was taken because these automakers are setting up in the country to produce, which generates jobs and income”, explained Márcio Elias.

Despite pressure from the automotive sector, the minister reinforced that the scenario for the domestic industry is positive. He highlighted that the dialogue with the market is constant and that Brazil is expected to break production and sales records this year, surpassing the mark of one million vehicles produced in the month of May alone.

For the government, increasing taxes on imported goods is a strategic tool to strengthen national industry at a time of retraction in traditional foreign markets, such as Argentina.
