Portuguese twins, Leila and Laila Lourenço, aged 22, were arrested by customs authorities at Geneva airport, Switzerland, for transporting several kilos of marijuana in their respective luggage.
The young women, who had been reported missing after failing to contact their family members, are suspected of involvement in an international drug trafficking network.
According to , the sisters were intercepted last Wednesday, upon arriving in Geneva, coming from a flight originating in Bangkok, the capital of Thailand. Allegedly, they had gone to that country at the behest of a criminal organization, with the mission to collect marijuana and transport it to Portugal.
The twins managed to leave Thailand and stopped in Dubai. During their stay in this country, they published several photos on social media where they appeared together.
Before the trip, Leila and Laila would have informed their family that they would spend a few days in Porto, in the company of friends. However, they ended up leaving the country without revealing their true destination.
Afterwards, they continued their journey to Switzerland, where they would make a second stop before returning to Portugal. It was precisely at Geneva airport that they ended up being detained by the authorities.
The two young women must now be charged, tried and, if found guilty, sentenced in Switzerland. Portugal will only be able to intervene in the investigation if requested by the Swiss authorities, and the PJ can collaborate in investigating the sisters’ possible involvement in the alleged international drug trafficking network.
So far, no information has been released about the version presented by the two Portuguese women nor about any statements made to the Swiss authorities.
Thailand is currently one of the main origin destinations for this type of drug. Although the cultivation of the plant has been largely decriminalized in that country, its transportation remains subject to strict rules, requiring specific documentation to justify its circulation in certain circumstances, particularly for medical reasons.
