Violent incidents in German cities on New Year's Eve

a man was shot dead in Tauberbischofsheim, Baden-Württemberg, after he stole an excavator and then went on a “crazy” spree, colliding with cars and police cars that tried to stop him.

According to a statement from the police in the area, the man stole the excavator from the premises of a construction company in Grunsfeld, which he completely destroyed and drove it on a rampage for 12 kilometers to the neighboring Tauberbischofsheim.

Several police cars chased him, trying to stop him, but the driver refused to stop and repeatedly collided with them, also injuring a female police officer, who is being treated for non-life threatening injuries.

The man was eventually stopped when he fell dead from police gunfire.

Knife attack in Berlin

In the German capital, police said a man was arrested on Tuesday after he attacked and injured several people in the city’s Charlottenburg district.

Two of the injured were taken to hospital, but it was not known how many people were injured in total. According to the police, the alleged attacker is a Syrian citizen, with official residence in Sweden. He may be suffering from a mental illness and so far no terrorist motives appear to be behind the attack.

According to witnesses, he grabbed a knife from a nearby supermarket shelf and started hitting people indiscriminately, before being arrested, as reported by Bild. Berlin’s BZ newspaper reported that several bystanders attacked the attacker and held him down until police arrived.

Police continue to gather statements from eyewitnesses. “Shortly before 12:00 p.m., emergency services were called to Charlottenburg because a man had allegedly injured several people — possibly with a knife,” police posted on X.

Charlottenburg is a normally quiet district of Berlin.

Germany is still in a state of unrest after one earlier in December killed five people and injured more than 200 in the eastern city of Magdeburg. A Saudi doctor has been arrested on charges of murder.
