RECIFE, PE (FOLHAPRESS) – The president-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, spoke on the phone with Russian president Vladimir Putin on Thursday (7). They talked about the war in Ukraine, according to information released by the Washington Post this Sunday (10).

According to the newspaper, Trump advised Putin not to escalate the Ukraine War and reminded him of Washington’s “significant military presence in Europe.”

Trump, who spoke with Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski on Wednesday (6), the same day of his victory, said several times that he was capable of putting an end to the war in Ukraine “in 24 hours”.

Analysts argue that the statement signals the president-elect’s intention to pressure Kiev to give up Russian-occupied territory in the name of ending hostilities. The Republican was elected with a speech against the high financial cost of military support to Kiev offered by Biden since the beginning of the invasion, in February 2022. In addition, he made several complimentary comments about the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin throughout the years.

On Friday (8) -after, therefore, the supposed connection between Putin and Trump-, the Kremlin said it was willing to discuss the conflict with the elected president, but that it did not intend to change its demands for the end of the war, which include demand that Ukraine give up joining NATO, the Western military alliance, and withdraw its troops from the four Ukrainian regions illegally annexed by Russia.

Kiev rejects the terms, and states that peace can only be achieved after Moscow vacates the four regions and, most complicatedly, leaves the Crimean peninsula, which it has occupied since 2014, before the war.

Next Wednesday (13), US President Joe Biden will welcome Donald Trump to the White House. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said that Biden, a great supporter of Ukraine, will use the occasion to appeal to Trump not to abandon the invaded country.

“The president will have a chance to explain to President Trump how he sees things, where they stand, and talk to President Trump about how he’s thinking about dealing with these issues once he takes office,” Sullivan told CBS News.

He added that the Democrat still “will have the opportunity in the next 70 days to present the case to Congress and the incoming administration that the U.S. should not abandon Ukraine, that doing so means more instability in Europe.”

When asked if this means Biden will ask Congress to approve more funding for Ukraine, Sullivan abstained.
“I’m not here to present a specific legislative proposal. Biden will argue that we need continued resources for Ukraine beyond the end of his term.”
