Lula says he will “beat” the financial market: “They talk nonsense every day”

In an interview with RedeTVbroadcast on Sunday night (10), President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), criticized the pressure from the financial market for a fiscal adjustment and defended an approach focused on economic growth with income distribution.

“I see the market [o mercado financeiro] talking nonsense every day, don’t believe it, I’ve already beaten them and I’ll win again”, said the president.

The statement comes amid intense negotiations over a spending review package, prepared by the government’s economic team, which is about to be analyzed by the Palácio do Planalto.

Lula also stated that Congress and the Judiciary also have responsibility and must cut excessive spending. As an example, the president again mentioned the resources available to senators and deputies through so-called parliamentary amendments.

The president also insinuated that the country’s current fiscal framework is related to the administration of former president Jair Bolsonaro, highlighting that approximately R$300 billion was spent to support the former administration.
