Bárbara Bandeira elected best Portuguese at the MTV EMA. Busta Rhymes receives special award… but he wasn’t very happy with MTV.
The singer Barbara Bandeira won the award on Sunday Best Portuguese Act in the 2024 edition of MTV Europe Music Awardswhich took place in England and crowned American Taylor Swift as the best artist.
This is the second time that Bárbara Bandeira has received this award, and she was also the most voted in 2022.
In this national category of the MTV European awards, awarded at the ceremony held at the Co-op Live in Manchester, were also nominated Bárbara Tinoco, Dillaz, Ivandro and Slow J.
In this celebration of the 30th anniversary of the MTV EMA, Taylor Swift (who was not at the ceremony) was the big winner, having collected four awards: Artist of the year, Best live artist, Best video – for “Fortnight”, with artist Post Malone – and Best American Artist.
The other big highlight from last night came from South Africa: Silence won three awards, including Best R&B Artist.
Thai K-pop artist Lisa won two categories: Best Collaboration, for the track “New Woman” with Spanish singer Rosalia, and Biggest Fan Base, ahead of Taylor Swift and the army of “Swifties”.
The Song of the Year award went to the American Sabrina Carpenter for the summer hit “Espresso”.
The trophy for Best Hip-Hop Artist was awarded to the ‘rapper’ Eminem, who took home this award for the tenth time.
In the rock category, it was Liam Gallagher, the legendary voice of the band Oasis, which came first.
An emotional Busta Rhymes received a special career award, the Global Icon – but did not hide his frustration with the past: “MTV EMA… It’s my debut here. It’s my first award. In his 34-year career, he had never received an MTV award. And it’s an incredible feeling.” THE rapper He especially thanked his mother and LL Cool J – who was just a few meters away.
The EMA ceremony highlighted women in the music world and opened with a remarkable – and aerial – performance by Benson Boone.
Further ahead, Rita Ora (who was the presenter) was the protagonist of a moving moment when she talked about Liam Payne, former member of One Direction, who a few weeks ago.

Another curiosity for the Portuguese was the presence of Rúben Dias. The Portuguese footballer presented the first award of the night.
The Manchester City player appeared alongside Alex Greenwood (also a City player) and said: “This city is known for football. So, nothing better than handing out the first trophy of the ceremony with a couple of football players who might know a thing or two about winning trophies.”
Rúben and Alex presented the prize for Best New Artist to Benson Boone.
