Trump names Elise Stefanik as US ambassador to the UN

The choice of the Republican congresswoman aims to continue the “American First” policy, focused on North American interests

The president-elect of the United States, Donald Trump (Republican Party) appointed this Monday (11.Nov.2024) the Republican congresswoman for the State of New York, Elise Stefanik as the country’s new ambassador to the UN (United Nations).

“I am honored to nominate Elise Stefanik to serve in my Cabinet as United States Ambassador to the United Nations. Elise is an incredibly strong, determined, intelligent fighter and advocate for ‘America First’.”Trump said at .

Stefanik, 40, is the current chair of the House Republican Conference and known for her strong alliance with Trump. She supported the former president during his first impeachment trial in 2019 and his electoral challenges in 2020.

The choice of the congresswoman for the position reflects the continuity of the “America First” foreign policy adopted by Trump. The policy is focused on prioritizing US interests over other nations and its approach seeks, among other things, to reduce dependence on international agreements, promote domestic production and protect American jobs.

The Republican congresswoman, elected for the first time to Congress in 2014, became the youngest woman elected at the time. Initially, she positioned herself as a moderate voice, voting against Trump’s legislation and distancing herself from him during the 2016 presidential campaign. However, her attitude has changed over the years, aligning herself more closely with Trump and his policies.
