The mix of celebration and farewell that took place among Flamengo fans last Sunday night (10) could last even longer than already announced. In addition to Gabigol, David Luiz may also have lifted his last trophy for Flamengo with the Copa do Brasil.

The contract between the club and the red-and-black defender ends in December, and no progress has yet been reported in talks for a renewal. Currently, David Luiz is not an absolute starter, but he occasionally enters the field and contributes not only in defense, but also in other roles, having scored a goal in the last round of the Brasileirão.

David Luiz himself, after winning the title, reinforced the uncertainty about what will happen next season. “I don’t know about tomorrow, the future belongs to God,” he said in an interview with ESPN.

For Flamengo coach Filipe Luís, he is a valuable piece on the team. “He is a player who makes the player better. Because sometimes you prepare five solutions for throwing the ball away, and David finds the one that no coach has, which is his individual solution”, he commented.

“His main thing is that he wants to help the coach, the young players. He wants to help in some way. Whether on the field or off, like today. From the bench, he gave me some touches that were important to understand the feeling”, he added.

Despite David’s importance in the team, Filipe also sees the end of his career for the player, who is already 37 years old: “He is a super talented player and is in the same process as I was last year. Not saying he’s going to stop, but he’s at the end of his career. I don’t know if it’s one, two, three, five years, but you have to reinvent yourself.”
