Disadvantages of a classic dish sponge
Common dish sponges are made from synthetic materials that burden the environment. Their shelf life is relatively short and they wear out quickly, so every household consumes a relatively large amount of them. Unfortunately, it also absorbs unwanted bacteria and odors very easily.
What is loofah?
Lufa is a plant from the cucurbitaceae family, the dried fruits of which are used as a natural sponge. This type of pumpkin, more precisely a climbing gourd-like plant, originally comes from tropical regions. However, it is currently cultivated all over the world.
It is 100% biodegradable and contains no artificial substances. Already in ancient Egypt, its hidden power was known even outside the kitchen, and there are rumors that even Cleopatra used it to beautify herself. When the loofah fruits are properly dried, the fibers can be used to make versatile sponges for cleaning and cleansing the body.
Why do you prefer loofah?
The loofah is much more durable than classic sponges and will last in good quality for several months to a year of regular use. Thanks to its structure, it does not absorb bacteria and odors as easily as classic sponges. Loofah is a completely natural and biodegradable product.
Unlike plastic sponges, it does not contain any chemicals that are released into the air. In addition, it is extremely gentle on the surfaces of dishes and does not leave scratches on them. A loofah can be used not only for washing dishes, but also for cleaning vegetables, fruits and also for body hygiene.
How to work with loofah
Before the first use, soak the loofah in warm water, it will soften and swell pleasantly. Then put some detergent on it and wash the dishes in the usual way. After use, rinse the loofah thoroughly and let it dry properly in a sufficiently ventilated place. Once in a while, wash the loofah in the washing machine at high temperature. After wearing out the loofah, compost it or dispose of it in bio waste.
