A 92-year-old woman died this Monday in the fire of her home, located in the north of the capital. The first to arrive were some agents from the National Police, who managed to rescue the victim and take her down to the portal, where she was treated by the Samur. The woman suffered inhalation burns, in addition to her face and arms, and was in cardiorespiratory arrest upon the arrival of the paramedics, who confirmed her death after unsuccessfully performing cardiopulmonary recovery maneuvers.
The fire started around two in the morning at number 21 Avenida del Ferrol, specifically on the 11th floor of a total of 13, the only one affected by the flames. The woman was alone in the house and everything seems to indicate that the flames originated in the living room, where she was. Eight fire crews rushed to the scene and quickly extinguished the fire. The flames have only reached the living room of the apartment, while the rest is heavily affected by smoke.
The residents of the lower floors have been evicted and evacuated to the street, while those on the upper floors have been confined to the roof to prevent them from becoming poisoned when going down the smoke-filled stairs, as explained in a video Rodrigo Barrero, chief of guard of the Madrid City Council firefighters.
The firefighters have ventilated the stairwell, have checked all the homes to check that no others have been affected and have accompanied the neighbors back to their homes. A psychologist from Samur has assisted the victim’s relatives, who have arrived at the scene and suffered a shock upon hearing the news of the death.
