On Tuesday it will be 1,000 days since Russian tanks rolled across the border with the aim of wiping out Ukraine in its current form. Russian soldiers had already invaded Crimea 2,919 days earlier. So we are approaching the four thousandth day of Russian aggression against Ukraine, not the thousandth. Perhaps Kremlin ruler Vladimir Putin would have decided to install a loyal despot and let Ukraine formally exist at the end of February 2022 if President Volodymyr Zelenskyj had packed his bags and left his country. Perhaps the Ukrainians’ will to defend themselves would have broken more quickly if their president had not been prepared to risk his own life for a free Ukraine.
