Iran is a strong ally of Syria, where Tehran has been involved militarily since the start of the Syrian civil war in 2011, sending advisers at the request of local authorities to support the president.
A coalition of rebel groups, dominated by Islamists, took control of a large part of Aleppo, Syria’s second largest city, and its airport, in a lightning offensive that began on Wednesday (27) and left hundreds dead. “We firmly support the Syrian army and government,” Abbas Araqchi said before leaving for Damascus. “The Syrian army will defeat these terrorist groups again, as in the past,” he said, quoted by the official IRNA news agency.
Araqchi declared on Friday (29) that these incidents in Syria were part of “an American-Zionist plan to disrupt stability and security in the region”, his ministry said. The head of Iranian diplomacy, whose last visit to Syria was in October, will next travel to Turkey. Araqchi’s visit to Syria comes after Iranian authorities on Saturday reported an attack on the Islamic Republic’s consulate in Aleppo by “terrorist elements.”
