The president of the European Council, António Costa, and the high representative of EU Foreign Policy, Kaja Kallas, began their new positions this Sunday with a surprise visit to kyiv as a sign of clear support for Ukraine. “We have come to give a clear message that we are in favor of Ukraine and we will continue to give it all our support,” said Costa, who like Kallas, formally took office hours before along with the new team of commissioners in the second term. from the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.
The president of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, received the couple and thanked them for dedicating their first day in their new positions to visiting the country. “This symbolic start to the work of the new leadership reflects the key priorities for all of us in Europe. Peace is the foundation and we will continue to do everything possible to end this war, which Russia has unleashed not only against Ukraine but also against a united Europe, both against the institutions of the EU and against the policies that support all European nations,” the Ukrainian president said.
The arrival of Kallas and Costa to express the EU’s support comes at a particularly difficult time for Ukraine, with Russian forces making important advances in the east and amid uncertainty about US support created by the return of Donald Trump to the White House.
