Winter in the garden doesn't have to be boring. These plants bloom during frosts

Contrary to appearances, there is no shortage of plant species that bloom in winter. If we choose the right specimens, we can ensure that there will be no shortage of colorful plants on our plot throughout this period. Therefore, it is worth knowing what plants bloom in winter and in what months they show beautiful colors.

December is a month in which, contrary to appearances, there is no shortage of colors. At this time, strong and dense heather bushes bloom, among others. We have many plants to choose from, as there are as many as 700 species of heather, of which about 40 are grown in the garden. The most popular are red briar and Darleis briar. Both of these plants have many varieties that bloom in winter.

It also blooms in the garden in December white hellebore, which delights with its flowers from December to January. This is also the time when the pink Autumnalis blooms. This month, it is also worth paying attention to a fragrant and ornamental shrub, which is usually planted in quiet and sunny places in the garden. We are talking about Chimonanthus praecox, a plant that produces beautiful yellow bells.

January is also full of colors in the garden. This is when, among other things, they start to shine yellow, fragrant flowers of mahonia intermedia. It is a large, evergreen shrub that also impresses with its beautiful leaves, consisting of many spiny, dark green leaves. A little later, mahonia bealei blooms, which is very similar to the above-mentioned intermediate mahonia.

January is also the time when witch hazel blooms. This shrub will decorate the garden with its strong colors. Depending on the variety, witch hazel flowers may have yellow, orange or even dark red.

What’s more, they have an interesting property – their petals curl up under the influence of frost and snow, coming closer to each other and covering the inside of the flower. Thanks to this, they can survive low temperatures, even down to minus 10 degrees Celsius. Additionally, this allows them to develop even under snow. Witch hazel leaves are similar to hazel and remain on the plant even until it flowers.

Even at the end of winter, there are many plants in the garden that bloom beautifully. This is the moment when blooms, among others edible dogwood, which, although its flowers are hardly visible, is still delightful. In February, the Dahurian rhododendron also blooms, with its small, funnel-shaped, purple flowers gathered in loose clusters.

Of course February is also associated with the appearance of the first crocuses, which create beautiful carpets of white, purple and blue flowers.. This month, we will also enjoy the beauty of plants such as the Amur grasshopper and the winter grasshopper.
