The Copa Libertadores da América will, in 2025, feature two clubs from the Northeast for the first time in its history. After the end of Series A of the Brazilian Championship, Fortaleza and Bahia confirmed their presence in next year’s continental tournament.
The team finished the Brasileirão in fourth place, with 68 points, and is classified for the group stage. , which came in eighth place in Series A, with 53 points, will compete in the preliminary phase of the international competition.
Leão will make its third appearance in the Libertadores, as it competed in the competition in 2022 and 2023. Esquadrão de Aço, in turn, will be present for the fourth time – the other three were in 1961, 1963 and 1989.
Bahia has the best campaign
The best campaign by a Northeastern player in the biggest tournament in South America belongs to Bahia, which reached the quarterfinals in 1989. On that occasion, the tricolor team was eliminated by Internacional.
Other notable campaigns belong to Fortaleza (2022 round of 16) and Sport (2009 round of 16). A team from the Northeast has never been champion of the tournament.
Libertadores Calendar 2025
The first phase of the 2025 Libertadores – in which Bahia will participate – is scheduled to take place on the 5th and 12th of February, with round-trip games. The clashes have not yet been defined.
