FIFA (International Football Federation) confirmed this Tuesday (10) the dates of the 2027 Women’s World Cup, which will take place in Brazil.
The competition will start on June 24th and end on July 25th, as decided by the board of football’s highest governing body.
Brazil was chosen in May to host the women’s world cup for the first time, after defeating the European bids of Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands.
“The 2027 Women’s World Cup is already taking shape and we can’t wait for the opening game on Thursday 24 June 2027 and all the games leading up to the final on Sunday 25 July 2027,” he said. Gianni Infantino, president of FIFA, in a statement.
“This historic tournament will have a massive impact not just in South America, but across the world, taking the women’s game to a new level in terms of participation and popularity,” added the top hat.
The ten venues nominated by Brazil to host the competition have stadiums that were renovated ten years ago for the 2014 World Cup: Belo Horizonte (Estadio do Mineirão), Brasília (Mané Garrincha), Cuiabá (Arena Pantanal), Fortaleza (Arena Castelão) , Manaus (Arena Amazônia), Porto Alegre (Estadio Beira-Rio), Recife (Arena Pernambuco), Salvador (Arena Fonte Nova), São Paulo (Neo Química Arena) and Rio de Janeiro (Maracanã).
The women’s World Cup in Brazil will have 32 teams. As the host, Brazil is guaranteed a place in the competition, with two more reserved for teams from Conmebol (South American Football Confederation).
UEFA (Union of European Football Associations) is entitled to 11 places, and the AFC (Asian Football Confederation) to six. There are also four vacancies each for CAF (African Football Confederation) and Concacaf (Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Football Associations), and one for OFC (Oceanian Football Confederation).
A ten-team playoff tournament will decide the remaining three spots.
It will be the tenth edition of the Women’s World Cup. The first was in 1991, in China, which also hosted the event in 2007. Other countries that hosted the World Cup were Sweden (1995), the United States (1999 and 2003), Germany (2011), Canada (2015) and France (2019). In the most recent edition, Australia and New Zealand organized the championship jointly, in 2023.
The Brazilian team is still looking for its first trophy in the tournament. The best result of Brazilian women to date was a runner-up, in the 2007 edition, when they were surpassed by Germany, in the edition held in China.
