Peace negotiations to end the war in Ukraine could begin already this winter, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced on Tuesday. The prime minister also hinted at a series of planned meetings as Poland seeks to play a leading role in ending this conflict. TASR informs about it based on the reports of the Reuters and AFP agencies.
“I will have a series of talks relating primarily to the situation beyond our eastern border,” said the prime minister at the cabinet meeting. Tusk will meet the leader of the German opposition Friedrich Merz on Tuesday, while he will also hold talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday evening.
According to Tusk, French President Emmanuel Macron will arrive in Poland on Thursday. He is supposed to inform Warsaw about the results of the tripartite negotiations in Paris, which were attended by the newly elected US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Zelensky, in addition to Macron.
“I really want Poland to be a country that will not only be present, but will set the tone for these decisions that should bring us security and secure Polish interests,” declared Tusk. He added that he is also in constant contact with Warsaw’s Baltic and Scandinavian allies, and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, according to him, will visit Poland during the first days of Warsaw’s presidency of the EU Council in the first half of 2025.
