Agreement between Government and Misericórdias: doctors in nursing homes will be able to start prescribing medical prescriptions

The Government and the Misericórdias signed, this Thursday, a protocol that allows the misericórdias to manage health units. Doctors working in nursing homes will be able to prescribe medications and medical tests.

The new measure allows users of nursing homes and long-term and palliative care to receive the same care without having to go to the hospital. In addition to this measure, Luís Montenegro announced that the Government wants Misericórdias to have responsibilities in hospital management.

O do known this week, accuses the Government of promoting private companies. The head of the Executive rejects the idea and reinforces the importance of an “armed wing” between the public and social sectors.

“The fact that we take advantage of the installed capacity of the social sector and even the private sector, does not mean that we are neglecting the National Health Service (SNS), the services provided by State equipment. Now, the opposite is that it is a absurd that it is after defending this main axis that we must give up on the others.

The agreement between the Government and Misericórdias comes into force this Friday.
