CCJ removes weapons and sugary drinks from “sin tax”

In the defeat of the rapporteur, opposition to the Lula government exempted IS weapons (Selective Tax); The PSD, led by Omar Aziz, managed to remove the focus on sugary drinks

Opposition to the government of (PT) overturned the collection of IS (Selective Tax) – popularly known as “sin tax” – about weapons and ammunition.

The measure was presented by the PL (Liberal Party) during the vote on the report of the main text that regulates tax reform, the PLP (Complementary Law Project), this Wednesday (Dec 11, 2024) by the CCJ (Constitution and Justice) of the Senate.

The PSD managed to remove the incidence of IS on sugary drinks. The interim leader of the party’s bench in the Upper House, (PSD-AM), justified that soft drinks and sugarcane juice make up the “drinks for the poorest”.

Therefore, pressure from the beverage and food sector prevailed – giants in the sector, such as Coca-Cola and Ambev, have factories in the Manaus Free Trade Zone.

The measures had been included by the rapporteur (MDB-AM). IS (Selective Tax) will be levied on:

  • vehicles;
  • vessels and aircraft;
  • smoking products;
  • alcoholic beverages;
  • mineral goods, including mineral coal; and
  • prediction and fantasy sport contests.
