The terrace is a relaxation space where we spend a lot of time in the summer. However, in order to use it in the next season, we must properly protect it against moisture, frost, wind and snow.. This applies to both wooden and concrete terraces, as well as those lined with tiles or composite boards. Each of these surfaces must be properly cared for and maintained.
Before the first snow arrives first we should cover or, preferably, hide things such as armchairs, tables or benches located on the terrace. It is also worth knowing that not all surfaces are protected in the same way for winter. So how to take care of individual materials?
Wood is sensitive to frost and moisture, so it may crack, deform and biodegrade during winter. An additional problem is caused by molds and fungi that penetrate the structure of this material. Therefore, oiling treatment should be used.
To do this, first thoroughly clean the wooden surface of any dirt, preferably using a pressure washer or a special detergent. Then we get rid of the old layer of varnish or oil – we wipe it off with sandpaper. After this step, we start oiling – apply the oil evenly, e.g. with a brush, in the direction of the grain. Remember to perform this procedure on a windless day, with a temperature of at least 10 degrees Celsius.
Concrete can be damaged by water causing micro-cracks. If we have already noticed any defects, then we have to repair them with cement mortar with the addition of synthetic resins. Only then do we apply a special impregnation and clean the surface of dirt.
- Terrace with ceramic tiles
Porcelain stoneware and clinker are the most durable materials, but even they require proper protection against snow. Therefore, we should first remove leaves, sand and dust from this material, and then apply silicone impregnation to the joints.which will prevent water from entering. Any cracks should be repaired immediately with appropriate repair material, while there is no frost.
- Terrace made of composite boards
Composite boards are a better alternative to wood because they do not require impregnation or oiling. We only need to clean them of dirt, check the patency of the drains and clean the surface, and finally wash it with a pressure washer..
Wooden surfaces must be cleared of snow regularlybecause the boards can quickly become waterlogged. This, in turn, leads to their cracking and deformation.
When it comes to a concrete terrace, it is more resistant to snow than a wooden onebut melting white fluff may cause microcracks. Therefore, we recommend clearing the snow regularly.
Ceramic tiles are resistant to low temperatures, but snow may damage them. So we should remove its thick layer.
The best material is composite boards. They do not absorb water and are not damaged by white fluff thanks to the anti-slip surface. That’s why we don’t have to scoop it up.
Let’s remember to Use a shovel with a plastic edge to clear snow, as the sharp edge may damage the material. This applies especially to wood and tiles. Remove snow gently, avoiding impacts, and remove ice using defrosting preparations intended for a specific material.
Applying all these principles, we will avoid spring repairs and therefore high coststhat are related to them.
