South Korea approves impeachment against president

Yoon Suk-yeol steps down immediately and South Korean Prime Minister Han Duck-soo takes over on an interim basis

The National Assembly of South Korea this Saturday (Dec 14, 2024) impeached the president of the country, (People Power Party, right-wing). There were 204 votes in favor, 85 against, 3 abstentions and 8 null votes. It was necessary for 200 of the 300 deputies to be in favor.

With approval, Yoon steps down immediately. South Korean Prime Minister Han Duck-soo (independent) takes over on an interim basis. The process goes to the Constitutional Court for evaluation. The Court has 180 days to confirm or reject the impeachment.

If the court confirms the motion, Yoon will be removed from office and a new presidential election must be held in the country within 60 days.

The South Korean president had faced another impeachment motion on December 7. The measure, however, after almost all members of the government party attended the session. The People Power Party controls 108 seats, while the opposition has 192.

The impeachment requests were filed after Yoon entered the country on December 3. At the time, the South Korean Parliament voted to overturn the measure. Hours later, the decree was revoked.

According to the National Assembly, the declaration of martial law “it was an unconstitutional and illegal act that did not meet substantive and procedural requirements”.
