A man was arrested on suspicion of brutally murdering his passenger, who he burned alive, on Sunday morning.
Police spokeswoman Jessica Tice described the incident as “one of the most horrific crimes that one human being could commit against another human being.”
He also said the woman was on a Brooklyn-bound train when she was approached by a man who used a lighter to set her clothes on fire.
The victim died at the scene, she said, adding that the suspect was arrested.
The shooter is an immigrant who came to the U.S. from Guatemala in 2018. So far no charges have been filed, but investigators are still questioning him and trying to determine a motive. The perpetrator pretended not to know by getting out of the train, while footage shows him trying to put out the fire he started. When the police arrived, he was sitting undisturbed on a bench. A few hours later she came back.
