Suede shoes, although they are very elegant, durable and do not go out of fashion, get dirty much faster than other leather models. This material requires regular cleaning and impregnation to look flawless even after intensive use. How to clean suede shoes from mud, dust and other dirt that is often difficult to remove? I found a genius patent for soft leather shoes – it keeps the flexibility and structure of the fibers and is simple and cheap at the same time. Try this powder for shoes that need a thorough cleaning to make them look like new again.
Can suede be cleaned with water?
If, like me, you are a lover of leather shoes and most of all you like to wear elegantly profiled and carefully sewn suede shoes, you probably also experience moments of irritation when they absorb dirt so easily. It is enough to wear them once in bad weather, so that they are covered with unsightly traces of a mixture of dust and water.
When your suede shoes get a little dusty, simply brush them to regain elasticity and intense color. However, if stains from mud or other strong dirt have accumulated on the surface of the material and deeper between the fibers, the brush alone will not be enough. Do you want to restore the softness, flexibility and velvety texture of the leather, but you don’t know if suede can be cleaned with water and ordinary cleaning agents? In her case, both methods are not recommended.
Suede is not only very prone to the accumulation of dirt, but also absorbs water easily. This delicate and unusual type of leather is therefore not suitable for wet cleaning, because dirt and water will soak deeper into the leather structure and small spots will “spread” over the shoe. which turn a small problem into a big disaster. You may not be able to remove such traces of improper care.
How to clean suede shoes?
For the safety of your shoes, do not use any aqueous solutions and do not experiment with them, if you notice they require care. If you don’t want your shoes to lose color, change their structure and become permanently deformed, only dry clean them. We explain how to clean suede shoes according to the requirements of this type of leather – the basic method is brushing.
If visible stains appear on the material, it is worth using a special cleaning eraser for suede. Such accessories are available in almost every shoe store and do not cost much. You can also equip yourself with suede sprayswhich not only clean the skin, but also impregnate it. Unfortunately, as it usually happens, when my shoes after an autumn-winter walk looked terrible, dusty and with traces of mud stains, it turned out that I did not have the necessary accessories at home.
Fortunately, my neighbor told me a genius trick that allowed me to restore the color and cleanliness of my shoes in a matter of moments while maintaining the elasticity of the short fibers. Here’s how to quickly clean suede shoes without chemicals and special rubber:
- Sprinkle a bit of baking soda on the contaminated area – make sure that the layer of powder is not too large, do not sprinkle the shoe with “scoops”, it is enough that the powder slightly covers the surface of the suede leather;
- Rub the soda applied to the leather between the fibers with a very soft brush – when rubbing, the intention is to separate the fibers stuck to each other by impurities without disturbing their structure and gently introduce white powder with cleaning properties between them;
- Leave the preparation on the shoe for at least 1 hour, preferably several hours in a room with constant temperature and optimal humidity of approx. 45% – during this time, the soda should be activated and, thanks to its disinfectant, strong cleaning and slightly abrasive properties, as well as absorbing water and neutralizing odors, it will facilitate the next stages of shoe cleaning;
- After the specified time, reach for the suede brush and carefully brush the dirty areas – this removes the active powder and loose impurities accumulated between the fibers, leaving the material clean and visibly refreshed.
The gentle action of baking soda allows you to remove dirt from suede shoes in a few moments, without disturbing the structure of the fibers, while maintaining their elasticity and velvety texture. Use a sprinkling of baking soda for preventative brushing, which will keep your favorite shoes looking flawless even with everyday wear.
