The snow cover in the Slovak mountains is below average, even on Tuesday there is a small avalanche danger, the first level of the five-part international scale. The Avalanche Prevention Center of the Mountain Rescue Service (SLP HZS) informed about it.
During Tuesday, the weather in all mountains of Slovakia will affect the interface between pressure height and low pressure, which it will bring a strong wind, mainly from the northeast direction.
The main avalanche problem is windblown snow, especially on southern, southwestern and southeastern exposures on steep to extremely steep slopes. “In the highest places, especially in troughs, troughs and terrain depressions, there are snow slabs and pillows that lie on a layer of old hardened snow cover and are clearly distinguishable from the older snow cover. The bond between the two layers is not sufficient, and with a large additional load it is possible to release a smaller avalanche.” alerted SLP. According to him, the threat of such smaller avalanches mainly represents the victim being dragged into exposed terrain.
The amount of snow in all mountains of Slovakia is below average. During the last snowfall, up to five centimeters of new powder snow fell. In the highest positions, especially in narrow troughs and cuts, a larger amount of snow can be blown locally on hard or icy ground. In such places, there are smaller slabs and snow pillows made of drifted snow, which lie on older, frozen, sometimes even hard ice layers. New wind-blown snow is insufficiently bound to the ground and its stability is weak. In many places, there is a hard to icy crust on the surface. Beneath this layer, angular-grained loose layers have formed and movement over them is difficult.
