Electronic equipment sold in the European bloc must have a USB-C input; the law was approved in 2022
The (European Union) law that establishes that all cell phones, tablets, cameras and other electronic equipment sold in the bloc must use a charger with a USB-C port came into force this Saturday (Dec 28, 2024).
In no X (formerly Twitter), the stated that the standard applies to all manufacturers. Only notebook producers will have the deadline extended to 2026.
The European bloc also said that the measure will benefit the “pocket” consumers and the environment by reducing the number of different types of chargers and cables needed to use electronic devices.
The EU will introduce the law in 2022. With the new rule, Apple had to change the connector on all its chargers sold in Europe.
At the time, the company was already using chargers with a USB-C input on MacBooks and iPads. However, it only started using the technology in smartphones from the one launched in 2023. Previous models use the input lightning.
