The United States on Tuesday imposed sanctions on Iranian and Russian organizations it accused of trying to interfere in this year’s US presidential election.
TASR writes about it according to the reports of the AFP and Reuters agencies and the CBS News website.
“The governments of Iran and Russia have targeted our election processes and institutions and sought to divide the American people through targeted disinformation campaigns,” said US Deputy Treasury Secretary Bradley Smith.
The organizations affected by the sanctions are the Center for the Production of Cognitive Design – a subsidiary of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) and the Moscow-based Center for Geopolitical Expertise (CGE).
According to the United States, the organizations wanted to “incite socio-political tension” in the country. The Russian company allegedly used artificial intelligence to create disinformation, which they spread through websites. The Iranian organization allegedly wanted to reach people with direct access to the election teams of presidential candidates.
“The United States will remain vigilant against adversaries who seek to undermine our democracy,” the US Treasury Department said.
Before the November election, President Joe Biden warned of attempts by some states, including Russia, Iran and China, to influence their results.
