Brazil assumes the presidency of the Brics bloc

From this Wednesday, January 1st, Brazil assumes the rotating presidency of the Brics economic cooperation bloc, formed by Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, and other recently admitted members: Saudi Arabia, Egypt, United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia and Iran.

This is the fourth time that the country has been at the head of the organization.

The country will adopt the motto “Strengthening Global South Cooperation for a More Inclusive and Sustainable Governance”, and will act on two main axes: global south cooperation and global governance reform.

During its mandate, Brazil intends to reinforce its commitment to more sustainable and inclusive global governance, stimulating economic cooperation and financing against climate change, in addition to artificial intelligence.

According to a statement from Planalto, the priority agendas to be addressed during Brazil’s presidency of the BRICS are: facilitating trade and investment between the group’s countries through the development of payment methods; promoting inclusive and responsible governance of artificial intelligence for development; improvement of financing structures to tackle climate change, in dialogue with COP30 (2025 United Nations Conference on Climate Change, in Belém, Pará); encouraging cooperation projects between countries in the Global South, focusing on public health and institutional strengthening of Brics.
