From 2025, Slovaks can also use electronic versions of the two basic and most used documents – the identity card and the driver’s license. This follows from the amendment to the Act on Road Traffic, which also changed the Act on Identity Cards.
The amendment introduces prerequisites for creating digital versions in mobile devices, as well as for their verification by control authorities. The possibility of creating digital versions of both licenses will not change the usual processes of issuing physical documents in any way.
“The prerequisite for creating a digital version of both licenses will be their issuance in physical form first. From a legal point of view, digital versions are defined in the draft law as equivalents, which means that they are literal copies of physical documents, which also includes any reasons for their invalidity or impossibility to use them,” explained the Ministry of the Interior.
In the first stage, digital versions of both documents are to be used only during police checks, except for border checkswhere according to international regulations, documents meeting the given physical prerequisites must be required.
“In practice, it will primarily involve the use of this possibility during checks carried out by riot, traffic and railway police patrols,” explained the ministry. In the next phases of the project, the expansion of functionalities and accessibility for third parties is expected.
