Vitória ended 2024 with a feeling of relief after escaping relegation in Serie A during the final rounds of the competition. With a title and qualification for the Copa Sudamericana in the account, the balance of the season was positive. However, a new year arrives and new goals will be set by Leão, who will compete in five tournaments in the new season.
On the 11th, Vitória makes its season debut against Barcelona de Ilhéus in the Campeonato Baiano. This will be the Bahian club’s first competition of the season and is scheduled to end on March 26th. The team led by coach Thiago Carpini reaches the state championship as the current champion. The red and black team won their 30th Baianão trophy against Bahia, winning the first game 3-2 at Barradão and drawing 1-1 in the return.
Vitória took the title and top scorer of the competition, divided between Alerrandro and Osvaldo. Both found the net five times. Over the 13 games, there were nine wins, two draws, two defeats, 24 goals scored and nine conceded. In addition to Leão, Atlético de Alagoinhas, Bahia, Barcelona de Ilhéus, Colo-Colo, Jacobina, Jacuipense, Jequié, Juazeirense and Porto are the participants in the 2025 edition of the Bahian Championship.
In the Copa do Nordeste, the scenario encountered by the red-black team is different from the state one. Last year, Leão failed to get past the group stage. Therefore, the club’s objective is to prioritize competition. Vitória starts in the first phase, with a scheduled start date of January 22nd. The tournament is scheduled to end on September 7th.
The Bahian club finished the group stage in 5th place in group A, outside the classification zone. In eight matches played at Nordestão, 14 points were achieved through four positive results, two draws and two defeats. Leão scored 12 goals and had the net leaked seven times.
In the Copa do Brasil, Vitória starts the competition in the first phase. According to the CBF ranking, the red-black team is in pot B and will face one of the teams from pot F. Leão’s possible opponents are: Humaitá (AC), Trem (AP), Ceilândia (DF), Inter de Limeira ( SP), Maranhão (MA), Operário (MT), Tuna Luso (PA), Operário (MS), Concórdia (SC) and Sergipe (SE).
Main competitions
This year, the Brazilian Championship starts on March 29th and has its last round scheduled for December 21st. In its second season back in the elite, Leão seeks to have a calmer campaign compared to what happened in 2024. Santos, Mirassol, Ceará and Sport have risen from the second division and are the red-blacks’ new opponents this season.
Leão finished the last Series A in 11th place, with 47 points added over the 38 rounds. 13 clashes were won by the Red and Blacks, while 17 were lost and eight games ended in a draw. Vitória had the net leaked 52 times and scored 47 goals, 15 of which were scored by Alerrandro. The number nine finished as the competition’s top scorer, tied with Yuri Alberto, from Corinthians.
What’s new in relation to 2024 is the Copa Sudamericana. Vitória has not competed in an international competition since 2016, when it was eliminated by Coritiba. The Bahian team enters directly into the group stage, with the draw taking place on March 19th. Leão’s first game is scheduled for the beginning of April.
