The incident, which occurred on New Year’s Eve, also resulted in approximately 30 injuries, generating great commotion in the city. Hours before the attack, Jabbar had published videos on his social networks, in which he expressed his desire to kill civilians and demonstrated the influence of the Islamic State. Furthermore, the FBI revealed that he had planted two homemade bombs on the streets of the French Quarter, where the attack unfolded.
After running into the crowd, Jabbar was involved in a shootout with the police, being killed during the exchange of gunfire. Inside the vehicle used in the attack, authorities found an Islamic State flag, as well as weapons and improvised explosive devices. Although there was initially speculation about a possible connection to an attack in Las Vegas, this line of investigation was discarded. Authorities confirmed that Jabbar acted independently, without any support or coordination with other groups.
