Approximately 40 kilometers from the capital, they observed 20 drones of unknown origin.

Danish police are investigating the origin of up to 20 drones that flew over the Baltic Sea port, about 40 kilometers south of the capital Copenhagen, on Friday evening. TASR informs about it according to the DPA agency.

An eyewitness reported the unusual phenomenon at the port in the city of Koge. A patrol sent there then spotted four drones before they disappeared over the sea at high speed. According to Saturday’s police statement, it is currently unclear where the drones came from, why they were in the area, and who launched them. However, the Danish intelligence service PET has already been informed about the incident.

Like Copenhagen, Koge is located on the east coast of the Danish island of Sjaelland. The city is located on the coast of the bay of the same name, which opens into the Baltic Sea.

Nordic countries fear sabotage

Drones of unknown origin have been repeatedly spotted over power plants and airports in Scandinavia in recent years. According to DPA, the local authorities were unable to clarify who launched these drones. Due to the sighting of drones during one night in September, air traffic at Stockholm’s Arlanda airport was temporarily stopped, which the police are investigating as possible sabotage.

According to DPA, the latest incident occurred at a time of concern in the Nordic and Baltic states about possible sabotage by Russia. Several submarine cables have been damaged in the Baltic Sea region in recent months, including Estlink 2, which connects Finland and Estonia.

Finnish investigators believe that the Eagle S tanker allegedly belonging to the so-called of the Russian shadow fleet played a role in the sabotage aimed at damaging the Estlink 2 cable. According to the DPA, Russia uses this shadow fleet to export Russian oil in violation of the sanctions imposed on it after the invasion of Ukraine. At the end of last year, in response to these incidents, the North Atlantic Alliance announced that it would strengthen its military presence in the Baltic Sea as a deterrent.
