The Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, met on Saturday with the president-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, at his residence in Mar-a-Lago, Florida, according to media reports from both countries. Meloni made a surprise visit to the president of the United States, with whom he also shared a dinner and watched a documentary about the American judicial system.
The meeting agenda has not been made public but, according to The New York Timesone of the topics that could have been on the table is last month. The American media cites a source familiar with the meeting who claims that Meloni would have “aggressively pushed” to meet with Trump.
Approximately five hours after her arrival, the Italian prime minister returned to Rome. According to the media, Trump and Meloni shared a dinner and attended the screening of the documentary Eastman Dilemma: Lawfare or Justicewhich maintains the thesis that in recent years the United States has witnessed the emergence of a “judicial system with double standards” that has unfairly attacked lawyers representing conservative clients.
“It’s very exciting, I’m here with a fantastic woman, the Italian prime minister. “It really took Europe by surprise,” reports Italian public radio television RAI, citing some American journalists present at Trump’s residence.
Present were Florida Senator Marco Rubio, appointed Secretary of State by Trump, Florida Congressman Mike Waltz, appointed national security adviser, and Scott Bessent, appointed Secretary of the Treasury. United States President Joe Biden plans to travel to Italy from January 9 to 12, in the final days of his term.
