On Friday, January 10th, the city of Leiria hosted the inauguration of the “largest smart store in the world”. The new Continente Bom Dia unit, located in São Romão, combines the functionality of a traditional store with advanced technology from the Portuguese company Sensei.
Founded in 2017, Sensei aims to transform the traditional retail sector by optimizing stores and the customer experience through artificial intelligence. The company developed an algorithm that transforms security cameras or other installed cameras into sensors capable of digitizing store space, products and customer interactions. The technology allows you to monitor in real time the flow of customers entering and leaving, movement within the store and sales generated, all on an intuitive control panel.
In the new Continente Bom Dia store, which occupies more than 1,200 m², Sensei’s technology is implemented on a larger scale. A virtual shopping cart automatically records, in real time, the products that customers place in the cart. At the end of the purchase, the customer simply opts for smart checkout to validate and pay for the items, without needing to go through traditional cashiers. For products of varying weight, such as fruits and vegetables, digital scales read the items.
According to , the store also offers six ATMs and two manuals, 55 free parking spaces and four charging stations for electric vehicles. In terms of sustainability, the space is equipped with solar panels, low-consumption LED lighting and water control systems, in addition to encouraging the use of reusable bags.
With an investment of 6 million euros, of which 1.5 million euros were dedicated to the implementation of Sensei technology, the store generated 28 new jobs, the 17th in the Leiria district.
