Europe’s largest airline says the measure aims to reduce incidents of drunk people during flights

The largest flight company low-cost (low cost) in Europe, wants the EU (European Union) to establish a limit of 2 drinks per passenger at airports on the continent. The objective is to avoid inconvenience caused by inappropriate behavior during flights.

According to a company spokesperson, the control could be implemented using the boarding pass. The system would record the purchase, limiting the person to consuming a maximum of two drinks before traveling.

The proposal is similar to the restrictions applied to purchases of duty free (tax-free stores), where the boarding pass is also used to register and control what the passenger can buy, depending on the flight destination.

“During flight delays, passengers consume alcohol uncontrollably at airports, without any limit on purchase or consumption”a spokesperson, in a statement released on Monday (13.Jan.2025).

Ryanair is already facing problems related to the topic. In April 2024, a company flight from Dublin, Ireland, to Lanzarote, Spain, had to be diverted to the city of Porto, Portugal, due to the behavior of a drunk passenger.

The company is the passenger in question, demanding €15,000 (around R$79,000) in compensation for the damage caused. According to Ryanair, the behavior “unacceptable” forced the flight to be diverted and caused losses to the operation.
