Xi said Putin might regret the invasion of Ukraine, says newspaper

Chinese President Xi Jinping said during last week’s summit with Donald Trump that his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, could end up regretting the invasion of Ukraine, the American newspaper Financial Times reported, citing several people familiar with the American assessment of the event.

According to the report, he made the comments during conversations that addressed Ukraine and included Trump’s suggestion that leaders should unite against the ICC (International Criminal Court).

Another source familiar with Xi’s meetings with former US President Joe Biden said the two had conversations about the conflict, but that the Chinese leader did not offer an assessment of the Russian president.

The information comes moments before they meet during a state visit by the Russian president to the country. The trip marks the 25th time Putin has visited his ally in more than two decades in power.

According to Russian officials, Putin and Xi should discuss topics such as the war in the Middle East, the situation in Ukraine, energy cooperation, bilateral trade and the construction of a “multipolar world order”, less dependent on American influence.

Kremlin adviser Yury Ushakov said the two leaders should release a joint statement advocating a “new type of international relations” and the strengthening of an international system not dominated by the US.
