A car driver in the Serbian metropolis of Belgrade rammed his vehicle into a crowd of protesters blocking the street on Thursday. A young woman was seriously injured in the collision. Student protests continue in Serbia, in which demonstrators demand a transparent investigation into the collapse of the shelter of the renovated railway station in Novi Sad. 15 people died in the tragedy of November 1 last year. After the collision, the injured woman ended up on the roof of the vehicle, while the driver continued to drive. The woman then fell and had visible bloody injuries on her head. The driver escaped from the scene of the incident in the center of Belgrade. However, police said they arrested him shortly after and charged him with attempted murder. There have been several such incidents during protests since the blockades began, but this was the first case that resulted in a serious injury.
After the collision, hundreds of students spontaneously gathered in front of the Faculty of Law building in Belgrade to express their support for the injured woman. They chanted slogans such as “Killers” and “We will not allow you to ram into us.”
Roadblocks in Belgrade have been held every day since November 1 at 11:52 a.m., the exact time the shelter collapsed. The Serbian prosecutor’s office has already charged 13 people in connection with the tragedy at the end of December, including former Minister of Construction and Transport Goran Vesič, who resigned a few days after the tragedy. However, students continue to protest and say that adequate accountability has still not been held.
