The Prime Minister of Hungary, the ultranationalist Viktor Orbán, will not attend the inauguration of US President Donald Trump on January 20 due to agenda issues, according to his press chief, Bertalan Havasi, to the digital newspaper ‘Telex’. Instead of traveling to Washington to participate in the inauguration ceremony of his ally Trump, Orbán will present on the same day in Budapest the results of the rotating presidency of the European Union (EU), which his country held in the second half of 2024, the aforementioned Magyar media reports this Wednesday. At the moment it is unknown whether the Hungarian Government will be represented by an envoy from Orbán at the event to which the Hungarian president has been invited, along with other political leaders. Among them, several leaders of the extreme right stand out who have already announced their participation, such as the British Nigel Farage, the Frenchman Eric Zemmour, the Dutchman Geert Wilders or the Belgian Tom Van Grieken, the portal highlights, without specifying the source of this information. The news that Orbán will not attend the event has attracted attention due to the good relationship he has maintained with Trump since in 2016 he became the only head of a Government of the European Union (EU) to express his support for the Republican candidate in the presidential elections of that year. Both leaders share a clear ideological affinity, with nationalist positions and a categorical rejection of immigration.
