Brazilian and German beat Italian, Lucia Bronzetti, and Ukrainian, Anhelina Kalinina, by 2 sets to 0 in the early hours of this Sunday (19)
and Laura Siegemund go to the third round of the doubles tournament . They beat the Italian Lucia Bronzetti and the Ukrainian Anhelina Kalinina by 2 sets to 0 in the early hours of this Sunday (19), with scores of 6/0 and 7/6. In the next phase, Bia and Laura will face Canadian Gabriela Dabrowski and New Zealander Erin Routliffe, who beat British Maia Lumsden and Czech Anna Siskova by 2 sets to 1.
The first set was dominated by the Brazilian and the German. They won the first game without letting their opponents score. The dynamic was almost repeated in the fifth game, but Bronzetti and Kalinina scored once before the end. In the sixth game, the Italian and the Ukrainian almost avoided the tire, but Bia and Laura managed to prevail and close the set brilliantly. Bronzetti and Kalinina “got it together” in the second set. Even though Bia and Laura opened with victory in the first game, the opponents stopped. From then on, for each game won by the Brazilian and German, the Italian and the Ukrainian tied.
Thus, the second set went to a tie-break, with 6 to 6 on the score. The final game was tight, with a point-to-point dispute. The account was closed on Laura Siegemund’s serve, to make it 6-5 in the game. The German is 19th in the women’s doubles ranking, while Bia Haddad is ranked number 60. In the history of the Australian Open doubles tournament, however, the Brazilian has a better record. His best record was the final in 2022, alongside Kazakh Anna Danilina. Laura’s best result was the quarterfinals last year, alongside Czech Barbora Krejciková.
Bia’s classification in doubles came after frustration in singles. Even though she was a favorite, Bia lost to Russian Veronika Kudermetova by 2 sets to 0, in the early hours of Saturday, and fell into the third phase. If she won, the Brazilian could reach a historic milestone and become the first representative of the country to reach the round of 16 of the Australian Open in the Open Era of tennis – since the sport admitted professional players. Now, Bia and Laura are the only pair with a Brazilian member in the women’s doubles tournament. On Saturday night, Luisa Stefani and the American Peyton Stearns fell to the French Kristina Mladenovic and the Chinese Shuai Zang. Previously, Luisa and Peyton themselves had eliminated Ingrid Martins and the Romanian Irina-Camelia Begu.
