Lula promises dialogue with traders to make food cheaper

The president (PT) said this Sunday (26 January 2025) that he will talk to wholesalers, supermarket owners and producers to try to reduce the price of food in Brazil. The statement was made in a video recorded in the garden of Granja do Torto, in Brasília, and by first lady Rosângela da Silva, known as Janja, on Instagram.

“We will hold as many meetings as necessary to make all decisions. We don’t want to have inflation because you’re the one who pays, the worker, the one who goes to the supermarket to buy food”said Lula.

The president listed factors that, according to him, contribute to rising prices: “The rise in the dollar contributes to increasing the price of meat, soybeans, corn and other products that we export. But we also have to remember the fire, the heat, the lack of rain and the excess rain”, he stated.

Lula also cited the “purchasing capacity of the people” as one of the factors. “When there is an increase in demand, that is, when people can buy more, sellers actually increase prices. So, by increasing the price, we run the risk of inflation. And we don’t want to have inflation because you’re the one who pays with inflation, you’re the worker, you’re the one who goes to the supermarket to buy food.”these.

“We are discussing, we are going to hold many meetings with wholesalers, with supermarket owners, with producers, so that we can find a solution to ensure that the food arrives cheaper, according to your purchasing power”, he added.

According to the IPCA (Broad National Consumer Price Index). Avocado recorded the biggest increase (174.7%), followed by lime orange (91.0%) and tangerine (74.2%).

Beef increased by 20.8% last year, with emphasis on cuts such as chuck (25.2%) and duck (24.1%). Other basic items also registered significant increases: ground coffee (39.6%) and long-life milk (18.8%).

INDICES WORRY LULA

Lula’s government mobilizes at the beginning of 2025 in an attempt to make food cheaper throughout the year. The issue is dear to the PT government, due to its social appeal and the need to improve popularity ratings.
