President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT) made a publication on social networks on Thursday (13) in which he says that reciprocity and dialogue are principles that should guide the international relationship between countries.

“Reciprocity and dialogue are principles that should guide the relationship between countries. Brazil is, and will continue to be, from Brazilians, ”wrote the president on X (former Twitter).

The publication takes place a day after the. The measure directly affects Brazilian exports, which totaled US $ 3.2 billion in 2024. Brazil is the second largest steel supplier to Americans.

On the afternoon of Wednesday (12), the Brazilian government issued an official note in which it classified as “unjustifiable and mistaken” the decision of the US President Donald Trump. The text also says that the government will call the World Trade Organization (WTO) and continue to seek, in coordination with the private sector, measures to defend national interests.

On different occasions, when asked what Brazil’s position would be if Trump, Lula stated that the reaction would be “reciprocity”.

However, on Wednesday afternoon, Finance Minister Fernando Haddad said that Brazil does not plan retaliation measures to the United States and that Lula’s orientation is to follow the path of dialogue and negotiation.

“Let’s not do it [com retaliação] by guidance of the President of the Republic. President Lula said ‘very calm at this time’. We have negotiated other times in more unfavorable conditions than this, ”the minister told reporters shortly after meeting with representatives of the steel industry.
