Decision is based on the lack of studies on the security and effectiveness of the plant as a food component
ANVISA () prohibited the sale of food supplements containing ora-pro-nobis, scientifically known as Accuala peaskia. The decision was announced on Thursday (3.br.2025) and published in the Federal Official Gazette. Here A (PDF – 123 KB).
The measure is based on the absence of authorization of the plant as a component of food supplements, due to the lack of security assessment and effectiveness by the agency. Anvisa pointed out that for an ingredient to be approved as a food supplement, companies must prove their safety and effectiveness through scientific studies.
The agency emphasized that dietary supplements are not medicines and should not promise therapeutic effects. They aim to complement the diet of healthy individuals, providing nutrients and bioactive substances.
The prohibition does not affect the consumption or marketing of the fresh ora-pro-pro-obis. The plant can be consumed without restrictions. The restriction applies only to the products that use it as an ingredient in food supplements.
Anvisa has made available on its official website a list of the authorized constituents for use in food supplements. The list serves as a reference for consumers and companies in the sector.
