For 52% of Brazilians, former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) should be arrested for the alleged attempted coup. This is what the Datafolha survey published on Tuesday (8).
According to the survey, 42% of respondents say Bolsonaro should not go to jail and 7% could not answer.
When asked if the former president would indeed be arrested, 52% believe no, already 42% believe yes. 7% did not respond either.
When comparing regions, the North/Midwest base presents a technical draw, where 47% believe it should be arrested, against 45% they say otherwise.
Already in the southern region, 49% say that the former president should remain free, compared to 46% who want his arrest.
Religion also appears to influence the answer. Among the interviewed Catholics, 55% support the arrest of 39% that oppose. Among evangelicals, 54% are contrary to detention, compared to 38% favorable.
In politics, 79% of people who want to vote in 2026 believe that Bolsonaro does not deserve detention, among them, 62% think this will not happen.
For the survey, 3,054 Brazilians were interviewed over 16 between April 1 and 3, in 172 cities. The margin of error is two points for more or less.
Exception
Overall, opinions presented balance with some exceptions, such as in the Northeast, where 59% agree with the arrest. Already among the female population, only 36% disagree with the imprisonment of the former president, as well as those who have complete elementary school (35%).
On the other hand, among those with higher education, 50% believe in prison, as well as those who earn more than 10 minimum wages (47%).
Among the young population, between 16 and 24 years, 57% think Bolsonaro will remain free. People with medium education and those who earn between 2 and 5 minimum wages have a similar value of 56%
