Sometimes it takes decades for an association to catch up with itself. Rapid could have done this on Thursday evening – and failed. In the second leg of the Djurgården conference quarter-final from Sweden, the Viennese had to give up 1: 4 after extra time. The disappointment was huge. Because Rapid had not only played against Djurgården. It also played against its own past – around 1996, around 1985, against the longing to finally count European again.
