Madrid will soon have 1,000 more municipal police. This was advanced on Wednesday morning, ViceAlcaldesa and Delegate of Security and Emergencies, Inma Sanz, at an informative breakfast of Europa Press in which José Luis Martínez-Almeida has presented her as her substitute under the command of the city before. The councilor says that she will despite the “limitation” of the replacement rate imposed by the Government of the Nation. However, the Madrid City Council cannot contradict what the replacement rate set by the General Budgets. The new places will not exceed that limit, but will hurry it to the fullest, they point out from the Security and Emergency Area. The delegate has detailed that the template expansion will be done in two batches. The first will be in summer, which will be extended in 550 places, and the rest will be completed in autumn.
However, when that happens, it will still be missing for months for the new agents to patrol the streets. First they will have to face a long period of exams and training. According to the delegate, they are expected to join the police body from the fall of next year.
The Security Delegate has presumed that Madrid is one of the safer capitals in the world and that, although it is a trend that is increasing, it is concerned about the phenomenon of what it calls Inquiokupation: tenants who stop paying rent. “It is not a receipt that in a rule of law it has to be a private company who does that unemployment and that security forces cannot be done,” said the vice mayor in reference to groups such as Desokupa. The councilor has called for the law to change and the owners of a house can be expelled in just 48 hours.
Through this phenomenon, the delegate has justified the need to increase the banks of municipal police officers. But simultaneously, he has defended that since Almeida arrived at the Mayor’s Office in 2019, crime rates have “declined substantially in Madrid.” However, there are crimes that admits that they are increasingly frequent, such as sexual aggressions.
The councilor has presumed that there are 2,000 more agents of the Municipal Police since the PP replaced Manuela Carmena in the Government of Madrid. Along the same lines, Sanz has announced that the Madrid City Council will install new security cameras in the Plaza de Porto in Carabanchel and in the Plaza de Jacinto Benavente. The number of those already in Tirso de Molina and Azca will also be expanded.
