Ukraine: The Starlinka outage complicated military communication

More than a two -hour outage of Starlink from SpaceX revealed the risks of addiction to the Ukrainian army on this connection. Oleksandr Dmitriev proposes to switch to local systems.

The Starlink satellite system, which is also used by the Ukrainian army, recorded more than a two -hour outage on Friday night, said the high -ranking representative of the Ukrainian army. The outage has caused global problems that have also influenced satellite internet providers, TASR reports, according to Reuters report.

Ukrainian forces are largely dependent on thousands of Starlink terminals from SpaceX, which allow communication on the battlefield or management of some drone operations. During the fighting against Russia, they proved to be resistant to signal disturbance or spying attempts.

A power outage

Starlink recorded an extensive network outage on Thursday. Downdtetector monitoring server said the network was unavailable to thousands of users. Representative of the Ukrainian army specified that the system stopped working on the whole front around 10.41 h and re -triggered around 1.05 h. According to him, the failure pointed out the risk of depending on these systems and called for diversification of methods of communication and connection. “The combat missions were carried out without (video) transfer and battlefield survey was carried out using offensive (drones),” the representative wrote on the telegram platform.

Local communication systems

The founder of the Ukrainian system to centralize information from thousands of crews of drones on the front of Oleksandr Dmitriev said that “if there is interruption of internet connection … The ability to conduct combat operations is virtually zero,” writes Reuters. He therefore called on the transition to local communication systems that are not dependent on the Internet.

Although Starlink does not work in Russia, Ukrainian officials said that Moscow troops also largely use such systems on the front lines.
