CNJ makes an unprecedented panel on press freedom – 18/08/2025 – Panel

An unprecedented survey on court decisions on press release will be launched on Tuesday (19) in Brasilia, during a seminar promoted by the Supreme Federal Court (STF), National Council of Justice () and entities that make up the Press and Judiciary Freedom Forum.

The data make up a CNJ panel developed by Jusbrasil EME Instituto Tornavoz.

The tool compiles 41,000 court decisions linked to the theme of press freedom in the last ten years. The year 2020 was the one that had the largest number of actions started, while 2022 registered the record of decisions.

In 2025, the São Paulo Court of Justice is the instance that most concentrated decisions, with 243. Second place is with the Amazonas TJ with 147.

Another conclusion of the study is that in 60% of decisions in press freedom actions there was an understanding that the content questioned followed the parameters of the exercise of press freedom. In 37.8% the court understood that the publication extrapolated the exercise of this right, and in the remainder it was not possible to verify.

The seminar, held at the CNJ auditorium in Brasilia, will be opened

For Katia Brembatti, president of Abraji, the event will be a milestone for discussions on press freedom and the judiciary.

According to her, the panel “is a way to promote more transparency and monitoring of how courts have understood the issue and how the protection of press work can be strengthened by the CNJ and other institutions.”
