Trump revokes protection status to Venezuelan immigrants

Measure announced by the security department affects 256 thousand Venezuelans who had protection against deportation

The Government of Donald Trump (Republican Party) has decided to end the temporary protection status for Venezuelans living in the United States. The measure was by on Wednesday (03.Set.2025) and affects hundreds of thousands of immigrants who received this protection during the Biden administration.

The status, which prevents deportations and authorizes legal work, ceases to apply on September 10. The measure began to be implemented in February, less than 1 month after Trump returned to the White House. The process faced legal obstacles in the following months, including a temporary blockade by a Federal Court in March.

The US Supreme Court authorized the federal government to continue the deportations, despite the initial blockade by a Federal Court. It is not yet defined how the deportation process will be conducted after the protection of protection, nor what options will be available to Venezuelans who want to remain legally in the country.

The internal security department justified the decision by stating that Venezuela no longer meets the criteria necessary to maintain the TPS. This status is granted to people from countries facing situations such as natural disasters or armed conflicts.

According to the Congress Research Service, 256,000 Venezuelans received TPS under the designation established in 2021. A court of appeals indicated that 600,000 Venezuelans living in the United States during the Joe Biden (Democratic Party) government benefited from temporary protections against deportation.

“Taking into account public security, national security, migration factors, immigration policy, economic considerations and foreign policy, it is clear that allowing Venezuelan citizens to remain temporarily in the United States does not serve the best interest of the United States.”said a spokesman for the internal security department in an official statement.

The Trump government accuses Venezuela President Nicolás Maduro (United Socialist Party, left), to foster drug trafficking. The United States even sent ships to the Caribbean Sea on the grounds of combating international trafficking schemes.
