September 7: Left seeks opposition to pockets – 06/09/2025 – Power

Union centrals and left -wing groups will do acts on Sunday (7) in defense of national sovereignty and in an attempt to mobilize the militancy on the streets amid the trial of the coup plot in the (Supreme Court).

Events should be attended by government ministers and allies (PT) and counterpoint to the scholarships scheduled for the same day. Known as “cry of the excluded”, the act has been occurring for 20 years and is organized by social fronts.

Since the former president (PL) began to use parades as part of his political flag, the act linked to the left has also gained connotation of political opposition to pockets.

The organization involves the FEAR PEOPLE FRONT, which brings together movements such as OEO, and the Forum of Union Centrals, which encompasses the main unions of the country.

The unions predict for the main demonstration in Praça da República, central region of São Paulo, from 9am.

The time was scheduled for the morning to avoid conflicts with pockets who will participate in the act in defense of Bolsonaro on Paulista Avenue, about 3 km away, which will take place from 15h.

The presence of Labor and Employment Minister and National President of the PT, Edinho Silva, as well as Federal Deputies of Lula, such as Guilherme Boulos (PSOL-SP) and Erika Hilton (PSOL-SP), were confirmed It is also expected that Marcio Macêdo, secretary general of the Presidency of the Republic, participate.

The CUT (Single Workers ‘Central) avoids talking about participants’ numbers and says unionists go to the streets to defend the “working-class agenda”, which includes sovereignty, income tax exemption for those who earn up to $ 5,000, super rich taxation, 6×1 scale, reduced working hours without salary reduction and against unrestricted pelotization.

The organization will collect signatures during the acts to try to press the National Congress through a “popular plebiscite,” as they called, about economic agenda.

Sergio Nobre, president of CUT, states that the moment is decisive and says that the expectation is a “qualified act”, with representatives of organized civil society. For him, however, the great symbolic act was, in Largo São Francisco.

“This September 7 has a very large symbolism, especially in the face of the attacks that the sovereignty of the country has been suffering,” Nobre said, referring to the tariffs imposed by the president of the United States, Donald Trump, to Brazil.

“It has no economic motivation. It is a maneuver with clear political objectives: to favor Bolsonaro’s candidacy in 2026 and pave the way for the election of a far-right president in line with US interests,” he said.

About amnesty, he claims that one cannot fail to rigidly punish those who committed crimes against democracy and calls the “blow” to an attempt to amnesty Bolsonaro and other defendants. “It’s a blow here, and this story the working class has defeated,” he says.

Ricardo Patah, president of UGT (General Union of Workers), adds that there can be no amnesty because that would be a way to devalue the powers.

“You can’t think of an unrestricted amnesty. We are valuing the supreme balance a lot, and we hope that the parliament will not succumb to pressures,” he says.

For Gilmar Mauro, MST leader, Sunday’s act will also serve as a test for the presence of the left in street demonstrations, after the political group is positively surprised by the number of people who attended an act on Paulista Avenue.

However, he asks that comparisons with the pocket act, which has mobilized more supporters in recent years.

“In leftist militancy there is an interesting indicative of mobilizing again. So we are not in a core of comparing data, who takes more or less for mobilizations. We want to mobilize progressive militancy throughout Brazil,” he said.

More than 40 demonstrations are expected across the country, distributed by 23 states and the Federal District.
